Where Is French Spoken?

As well as being the official native language of France, this stunning language is also spoken by approximately 4 million Belgians, 2 million Swiss, and 6 million Canadians in the province of Quebec. It is also spoken in the Caribbean islands; Martinique, Guadeloupe, and Haiti, and the former French colonies in South America, Asia, and Africa.

​French is the official language, or one of the official languages, for 25 countries and more than 40 million persons outside of France.

French is used as an international language of diplomatic exchange and is an official language of:

  • the European Union
  • UNESCO
  • NATO
  • the International Olympic Committee
  • the International Red Cross

It is also an official spoken language in Strasbourg, Brussels, and Luxembourg — the three cities where the EU institutions are headquartered.​
