Dutch is the national language of not only the Netherlands but also of Flanders in Belgium where a variety of Dutch called Flemish is spoken. Together they have provided Europe with some great cultural assets such as:
Windmills, along with clogs and tulips, windmills are probably the most well-known images of the Netherlands. The cheese market in Alkmaar is one of the most famous markets, and typical in the Netherlands. Revolutionary painters such as Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) is probably the most famous Dutch painter. Modern Fashion designers such as Viktor and Rolf, who are a Dutch pair of fashion designers and of course Modern furniture designers. Dutch is part of the Indo-European family of languages and belongs to the Germanic branch, as do English and German. Dutch has some similarities to the German language but has some other influences from the Romance languages. The vocabulary of Dutch also has strong similarities with the continental Scandinavian languages but differs quite a lot in text and speech. Where is Dutch spoken?Dutch is a West Germanic language spoken by about 25 million people as a first language and 5 million people as a second language, constituting most of the population of the Netherlands and about 60% of the population of Belgium. Dutch is spoken in the Netherlands. Flanders in Belgium, Suriname, South Africa Canada and Indonesia.
