Where is Arabic spoken? As the language of the Qu'ran, the holy book of Islam, it is also widely used throughout the Muslim world. There are many Arabic dialects including Classical Arabic ~ the language of the Qu'ran ~ which was originally the dialect of Mecca in what is now Saudi Arabia.
An adapted form of this, known as Modern Standard Arabic, is used in books, newspaper, radio and other media, in the mosques and in conversations between educated Arabs from different countries e.g. at International conferences. |

Benefits of an Arabic Language Course
It’s no secret that the ability to speak and understand more than one language is beneficial. Whether you’re seeking new career prospects or starting a business, speaking other languages sets you apart. Benefits include:
- More opportunities. As a result of globalisation, Arabic is a useful language in the modern job market. Several international businesses, government organisations, and humanitarian institutions seek applicants who are fluent in Arabic. Despite its prevalence, many countries report a lack of Arabic speakers in professional sectors.
- It helps with travel. The language barrier is difficult to cross when you’re travelling abroad. Often, you require the assistance of a local but can’t speak the language, resorting to hand actions that no-one understands. Strolling through markets and destinations and being able to speak and negotiate a deal removes the tension and uncertainty of international travel.
- It provides an opportunity to understand a new group of people. Arabs are often misunderstood, a reality spawned by the actions of a few radicals. This gap creates preconceived ideas about the entire population. Understanding the language empowers you to connect.
Common Mistakes People Make As They Learn Conversational Arabic
Learning Arabic requires commitment and time to become fluent. Avoiding these mistakes will keep you on the path to the successful learning of Arabic:
- Trying to learn it on your own. Arabic is not a language that can be self-taught by watching videos or reading textbooks. Pronunciation is key in this language, and the optimal way to pursue it is with a live tutor. Conversing with a native speaker is the ideal scenario through which to learn Arabic.
- Failing to practice every day. As with anything that you want to perfect, learning a language requires practice. Since most words in Arabic have a guttural sound, coming from the back of the throat, it’s difficult to master without plenty of practice. Fifteen minutes per day of pronouncing Arabic words is enough to help train your tongue and throat to grow accustomed to these words. Having a tutor to correct you is imperative.
- Failing to set a realistic end goal. It’s essential to understand what you want to gain from the course. Perhaps speaking Arabic is a priority to you over writing the language because all your interaction with Arabic-speaking people will be in person. Lessons and practice should focus on your specific goals to maximise the time that you spend learning.
