My journey began with a simple fascination for travel and a desire to work with a globally renowned airline. As I researched the best airlines to work for, Etihad Airways, with its reputation for excellence and its status as a major player in the Middle Eastern aviation sector, stood out. The idea of becoming part of such a prestigious team was exhilarating. But there was one crucial factor I hadn’t fully considered: the importance of language skills.
Etihad Airways, headquartered in Abu Dhabi, is deeply rooted in Arabic culture and operates predominantly in the Arabic-speaking world. Proficiency in Arabic emerged as a significant advantage for those looking to excel in this dynamic environment. I realized that learning Arabic could not only enhance my chances of securing a position but also enable me to connect more meaningfully with passengers and colleagues.
With a clear goal in mind, I dove into learning Arabic at Vocational Language Learning Centre. The process was both challenging and rewarding. Arabic, with its rich linguistic structure and unique script, presented a steep learning curve, but I was determined to persevere. I studied with VLLC but also engaged in immersive practices, and surrounded myself with Arabic media—films, music, and books.
The initial struggle of mastering a new alphabet and pronunciation was quickly overshadowed by the joy of understanding and speaking a new language. As I progressed, the language started to open doors not just in my studies but in my understanding of Middle Eastern culture, history, and etiquette.
Armed with my new language skills, I applied to Etihad Airways with renewed confidence. The ability to converse in Arabic was a standout feature on my resume and a talking point during the interview process. It was clear that my commitment to learning the language demonstrated my dedication and willingness to embrace the cultural nuances of the role.
Once hired, my Arabic proficiency proved invaluable. It allowed me to communicate effortlessly with passengers, address their needs in their native language, and provide a more personalized service. It also facilitated smoother interactions with colleagues and enhanced my overall experience working in a diverse and international environment.
Becoming a flight attendant with Etihad Airways was a dream realized, and learning Arabic was a transformative part of that journey. The language skills I acquired not only bolstered my career but also enriched my personal growth. I developed a deeper appreciation for Arabic culture, built lasting relationships, and gained a sense of accomplishment that comes from mastering a complex language.
Learning Arabic opened a gateway to a fulfilling career with Etihad Airways and provided me with opportunities to connect with people from around the world. It’s a testament to how language skills can be a powerful tool in achieving career goals and embracing new experiences. For anyone considering a career in an international field, investing in learning a new language can be the key to unlocking a world of possibilities.
