Or understanding a joke that doesn’t quite translate. Language is more than vocabulary and grammar — it’s memory, identity, and belonging woven into sound. For many people, reconnecting with their heritage begins not with a plane ticket, but with a phrase. Every language carries centuries of stories, migration, resistance, celebration, and survival and is a living history. When you learn or reclaim the language of your ancestors, you’re not just studying words — you’re stepping into the worldview of your family history.

Why does language feel so personal? Language shapes how we see the world. Some languages have words for emotions that don’t exist in English. Others encode respect, hierarchy, or intimacy directly into grammar.
When you reconnect with your heritage language, you may notice a different rhythm of thought; cultural values embedded in expressions; humour that only works “in the original”; family stories that suddenly make more sense. For second- or third-generation immigrants, this journey can be especially meaningful. It bridges the gap between generations — transforming “Where are you really from?” into a confident understanding of your roots.

You don’t need to become fluent overnight. Heritage connection is a journey, not a test. Here are some ways to begin: start with family and ask for information; make yourself aware of your cultural roots; accept imperfection - accents and mistakes are part of the process. Consistency matters more than perfection. Many people describe a powerful moment when something “clicks” — understanding a family story without translation, reading a poem in its original form, or speaking to a grandparent in the language they grew up with. It’s not just comprehension. It’s recognition. You may realise that the language was never truly lost — it was waiting.

Relearning your heritage language is an act of curiosity, courage, and care. It honors those who came before you and strengthens those who will come after. In every reclaimed word, there is a quiet homecoming. And sometimes, home begins with hello.

Contact VLLC if you would like to learn the language of your heritage to enable you to communicate with your relatives who do not speak English.
Photo 1 by Hoi An and Da Nang Photographer on Unsplash
Photo 2 by Angelyn Sanjorjo on Unsplash

I Learned Greek for Love (and to Finally Understand My Mother-in-Law)

https://www.vllc.com.au/language-journeys/i-learned-greek-for-love-and-to-finally-understand-my-mother-in-law

https://www.vllc.com.au/language-journeys/i-learned-greek-for-love-and-to-finally-understand-my-mother-in-law#comments

Uncategorized

When I fell in love with a Greek man, I didn’t realize I was also signing up to fall in love with a language. At first, Greek lived in the background of my life like fast, cheerful music. Whenever my partner called his mother, the room would fill with dramatic exclamations, long stories, and rapid-fire questions. I would sit next to him on the couch, smiling politely, catching only the occasional “Νίκο!” and the unmistakable tone of a mother giving instructions; about food, about clothes, about life. I didn’t understand the words, but I understood the energy.

Still, there’s something humbling about being in a conversation where you’re always the observer. I wanted more than polite smiles and summaries that began with, “She says…” I wanted to understand for myself. And if I’m honest, I really wanted to know what was being said about me. So I decided to learn Greek. Not because I had to. Not because anyone expected me to. But because love makes you curious. It makes you want to step fully into someone else’s world. I contacted VLLC and here is my story.

Greek is not an easy language when you didn’t grow up with it. The alphabet alone felt like cracking a secret code. Alpha, beta, gamma were letters I recognised in theory but struggled to pronounce in practice. I labelled objects around the house. I whispered καλημέρα (good morning) while making coffee. I practiced ευχαριστώ (thank you) until it stopped tangling on my tongue. There were awkward moments. Times I confidently said the wrong word. Times my partner laughed — kindly — while correcting my pronunciation. But slowly, the sounds began to soften. The rhythm started to make sense. Greek stopped feeling like noise and started feeling like meaning. My tutors were fantastic and the VLLC program gave me the language I needed to be able to start to communicate.

The first time I surprised his mother on a video call, I was terrified. “Καλησπέρα, Μαμά,” I said carefully. Her face lit up in a way I will never forget. There was laughter. There was applause. There was immediate, rapid Greek that I only understood about 40 percent of — but it was my 40 percent. And that changed everything.

Over time, I began catching small things during their conversations. I understood when she asked if I was eating enough. I understood stories about my partner as a mischievous child. I even began to recognise the affectionate teasing; including the parts that were, yes, about me. Then one day, while my partner stepped away from the phone, she kept talking. She didn’t realise I was following every word. “She is a good girl,” she said in Greek. “She tries. She loves him. I am lucky.”
For the first time, I didn’t need a translation. I didn’t need reassurance. I simply understood.

Learning Greek didn’t just give me vocabulary. It gave me access; to family jokes, to cultural nuance, to the warmth hidden inside fast-spoken sentences. It turned me from a guest into a participant. Language, I’ve learned, is one of the most intimate gifts you can give someone. It says, Your world matters enough for me to work for it. And now, when the room fills with quick, musical Greek, I don’t just smile politely. I join in.
Photo by Angelina and Antonis on Unsplash

Learning Spanish for Travel: What I’d Do Differently Next Time

https://www.vllc.com.au/language-journeys/learning-spanish-for-travel-what-id-do-differently-next-time

https://www.vllc.com.au/language-journeys/learning-spanish-for-travel-what-id-do-differently-next-time#comments

Uncategorized

When I boarded my first flight to Spain, I had Duolingo streaks, a pocket phrasebook, Google translate and high hopes that my Spanish would magically click the moment I landed in Madrid. Spoiler alert: it didn’t. While my trip was full of incredible experiences — sipping vermouth in Barcelona, getting wonderfully lost in the alleys of Seville, and chatting (or trying to) with locals in Granada — I quickly learned that the classroom Spanish I’d practiced didn’t always match what I needed on the ground. Now that I’ve lived the full traveller-with-basic-Spanish experience, here’s what I’d do differently next time — and what I recommend for anyone planning a trip to Spain with language learning in mind.

I believe I should have started learning sooner and focused more on speaking and listening. I started cramming Spanish about a month before my trip. Not terrible, but not ideal either. What I wish I’d done was begin three to six months earlier and focus less on vocabulary lists and more on speaking. Apps are great for basics, but real-life travel requires confidence in actual conversation. I knew how to say “Where is the train station?” but when someone answered me at full speed in Andalusian Spanish? Total panic.
On my return from Spain, I enrolled with Vocational Language Learning Centre where I am not only learning some structure behind the language but also doing a lot of practice with a native speaker.

Learn travel specific Spanish, not just textbook phrases. Textbook Spanish taught me “¿Dónde está la biblioteca?” but not how to ask a barista if they have soy milk. Or how to politely say “Can I sit here?” in a packed tapas bar.
The Spanish I actually needed involved:

Ordering food confidently

Asking for directions casually

Booking accommodation

Navigating public transport

Don't rely on English being an option. I was surprised by how little English was spoken in smaller towns — and even in parts of major cities. The more I moved off the tourist track, the more I had to rely on the Spanish I knew (which wasn't much). This was both intimidating and incredibly rewarding. Locals appreciated even my clumsiest attempts, and it opened doors that would’ve stayed shut had I stuck to English.

Prioritise listening comprehension. Reading and writing in Spanish came easier than listening. But in Spain, it’s all about keeping up with fast, colloquial, regional Spanish. The first time I heard someone drop half the letters from “¿Qué tal estás?” and say “¿Qué tal’ta?”, I realized how little I understood real-world conversation. Before your trip, listen to Spanish podcasts, YouTube channels, and TV shows — ideally from Spain. Turn on Spanish subtitles, then turn them off. This helped me tune my ear to the speed and rhythm of native speech.

My final thoughts: Learning Spanish while traveling in Spain was messy, humbling, and one of the most enriching parts of my journey. I made mistakes (lots), got laughed at (kindly), and slowly gained the confidence to say more than just “una cerveza, por favor.” Next time, I’ll be better prepared as I am nearly finished my Certificate in Social Proficiency with VLLC — but I’ll still leave room for those unexpected, unscripted language moments that make travel unforgettable.

How Jasmine Learned German to Launch Her Engineering Career in Germany

https://www.vllc.com.au/language-journeys/how-jasmine-learned-german-to-launch-her-engineering-career-in-germany

https://www.vllc.com.au/language-journeys/how-jasmine-learned-german-to-launch-her-engineering-career-in-germany#comments

Uncategorized

Jasmine always dreamed of working in the heart of Europe’s mechanical engineering industry—Germany. For many, this means not only embracing a partner’s background but also immersing oneself in their family traditions and languages. This blog explores the inspiring journey of a woman named Sarah, who decided to learn Greek to foster a deeper connection with her Greek in-laws.

Sarah, a native English speaker, found herself in a loving relationship with Alex, a first-generation Greek-American. As their relationship blossomed, so did her desire to connect with Alex’s family. She quickly realized that language is a powerful tool for building relationships and understanding cultural nuances. With Alex’s family primarily speaking Greek, Sarah felt that learning the language would not only help her communicate but also demonstrate her commitment to embracing their heritage. Sarah contacted VLLC to help her with this journey.

Like many language learners, Sarah faced several challenges. Greek, with its unique alphabet and complex grammar, can be daunting for beginners. However, Sarah approached her studies with determination. She enrolled with VLLC where she completed online lessons and had one to one tutorials with a native speaker. She also practiced speaking with Alex’s family during family gatherings. The initial struggles with pronunciation and vocabulary were met with encouragement from her supportive partner and his family, who appreciated her efforts.

As Sarah progressed in her language studies, she discovered that learning Greek was not just about vocabulary and grammar; it was also a gateway to understanding Greek culture. Through her lessons, she learned about Greek history, traditions, and the significance of family gatherings. This cultural immersion enriched her conversations with Alex’s family, allowing her to engage in discussions about Greek customs, food, and celebrations.

With each new word and phrase, Sarah felt more confident in her interactions with her in-laws. She began to participate in family events, from holiday celebrations to casual Sunday dinners, where she could practice her Greek in a warm and welcoming environment. Her efforts did not go unnoticed; her in-laws appreciated her dedication and were thrilled to see her embrace their culture. This mutual respect and understanding helped strengthen the bonds within the family.

As Sarah continued her language journey with VLLC, she experienced the joy of connection that comes from speaking another language. Simple conversations transformed into meaningful exchanges, and she found herself sharing laughter and stories with her in-laws. The language barrier that once felt daunting became a bridge that connected her to a new family and a rich cultural heritage.

Sarah’s journey to learn Greek exemplifies the power of language in fostering acceptance and understanding within families. Her commitment to embracing her partner’s culture not only enriched her own life but also deepened her relationships with her in-laws. For anyone considering a similar path, remember that learning a new language is not just about mastering words; it’s about opening doors to new experiences, connections, and a greater appreciation for the diverse world we live in.

In the end, Sarah’s story serves as a reminder that love knows no boundaries, and with a little effort and dedication, we can all learn to speak the language of acceptance and belonging. Contact VLLC if you find yourself in a similar situation!

I complemented my law degree with learning French at VLLC

https://www.vllc.com.au/language-journeys/i-complemented-my-law-degree-with-learning-french-at-vllc

https://www.vllc.com.au/language-journeys/i-complemented-my-law-degree-with-learning-french-at-vllc#comments

Uncategorized

To complement my law degree I decided to enrol with VLLC to student French and have now completed the Certificate III in Applied Language. As a law graduate, my proficiency in French has significantly enhanced my legal career. When I discovered the vibrant horse racing industry in Japan, I knew I had found my calling. However, I quickly realized that to truly excel in this field, I needed to go beyond my veterinary degree—I needed to learn Japanese.

My journey began with a simple motivation: to communicate effectively with my future colleagues and clients in Japan. I enrolled at VLLC in a Certificate II in Applied Language (Japanese), where I began my Japanese language journey. After mastering some basic language I was then introduced to the writing systems—hiragana, katakana, and kanji— which felt a little overwhelming. However, I was determined to push through.

To enhance my learning, I immersed myself in Japanese culture. I watched Japanese films, listened to music, and even started following horse racing events in Japan. This not only improved my language skills but also deepened my understanding of the cultural nuances that are vital in the equine industry. I learned about the significance of respect and tradition in Japanese society, which is especially important in the world of horse racing.

As I progressed, I began to practice speaking with my VLLC tutors and any other Japanese speaker I could find. These conversations were invaluable, allowing me to gain confidence and fluency. Because VLLC courses are based on individual requirements I was able to tailor my tutorials to focus on veterinary terminology, ensuring that I could discuss medical issues and treatments specific to horses in Japanese.

Today, as I prepare to embark on my career in Japan’s horse racing industry, I am grateful for the effort I put into learning the language at VLLC. It has not only equipped me with the skills to communicate effectively but has also opened doors to new opportunities and friendships. I am excited to contribute my veterinary knowledge while embracing the rich culture of Japan.

Learning Japanese has been a transformative experience that complements my veterinary degree. It has allowed me to bridge the gap between my passion for animal care and my aspiration to work in a dynamic and culturally rich environment. I encourage anyone considering a similar path to embrace the challenge of learning a new language at VLLC. It can lead to incredible opportunities and personal growth.

Photo by Violeta Pencheva on Unsplash
